SEPTEMBER
1998
From the Pres’ Desk
The dog days of summer are here and by the look of the turnouts on
Tuesday nights, a lot of us are enjoying the heat. Joel has us working hard but
we know it is for our own good. Isn’t it?
A correction is required to the last newsletter. I had misnamed Darren
Roux as the Tech Shop North team member at the Jasper-Banff Relay. In fact
it was our very own Darren Weldrick. Darren ran Stage 4 and was 1st
overall in that stage with a time of 6:11 per mile. The stage was approximately
10 miles long. Now that’s flying! Darren also ran in the Kaninaskis
100-mile Relay a few weeks later.
I’ve started racing again after taking the first half of the summer off.
I know that many of you are also having fun and doing well at races. This
newsletter highlights many of the members’ accomplishments. Just remember, it
doesn’t matter whether you race or not; whether you place in your age group or
not; as long as you are out there doing something your body and your mind will
thank you for it.
A reminder to everyone that our annual race, the MAD DOG SCRAMBLE
will be held once again this fall on October 31st. It’s a great race and a lot
of fun. The overall winner of the MAD DOG is rarely, if ever, one of the
fastest runners because everyone is handicapped according to their recent
(honest) times in a 5k or 10k. Also, only the race Director will know the
course prior to the race. Look for more information in this newsletter. Bring
out a friend. Also, wear old shoes. You’ll understand why once you’ve run it.
Happy running,
John

Safety
The days are getting shorter and if you are running at night, remember
to put on your reflective and
light-coloured clothing. As the Tuesday evenings get darker when our
regular workout ends it is essential to be seen by drivers. XSNRG requires that
all runners maintain the appropriate level of safety and this includes wearing
reflective apparel. In an effort to ensure that this happens, the executive
members will have at their disposal some of the ugliest reflective vests known
to mankind. Anyone who does not come ready to run with the appropriate
reflective gear as the days get shorter will be forced to wear our ugly vest.
How’s that for incentive to come prepared?!
Longboat Challenge
The Longboat Running Club has thrown down the gauntlet. They are making
arrangements for a mini track meet to be held on an as yet undetermined Tuesday
night in October at Central Tech High School (Bathurst and Harbord). XSNRG has
been invited to participate in the events that evening. The events will be the
400m., 1,500m. and the 4 x 400 relay. Anyone interested in participating at
this track meet, please speak with either John Petrosoniak or Tim Klassen at
any time.
XSNRG WEBSITE
We are in the process of putting all newsletters on the web beginning
with this issue. The website will be hosted by Bill James and you can find him

The following article appeared in a
recent issue of Running Room’s newsletter:
TORONTO PUTS
ITS BEST FOOT FORWARD
Avon Running
Close to 1,000 women took to the
streets of downtown Toronto on Sunday, July 5 to run and walk in the inaugural
Avon Running - Toronto event, part of the Avon Running - Global Women's
Circuit.
The weather conditions were ideal
for the girls and women who participated in the 5K Fitness Walk and the 10 K
Run. The event attracted many newcomers to the sport with over 275 entering
their first event ever. Avon was well represented with a turnout of 105 Dealers
and Associates who were easy to spot wearing yellow race numbers.
Elizabeth Carmichael, 37, of North
York was the overall winner of the 10 K in a time of 35:55. She was followed by Paula Davlan (36:31) and
Marion Schoeler (37:01). Davlan, 27, is a resident of Aurora, Ontario and
Schoeler, 32, lives in Toronto.
Carmichael, along with the top Avon
Sales Dealer, Hazel Greavette (46:52) and top Master's runner, Joyce Switzer
(37:29) will receive all-expenses paid trips to the Avon Running Global 10K
Championships to be held in New York City in the spring of 1999. Switzer's trip
has been sponsored by the Bank of Montreal. The top team and the winner of the
Running Room club team award was the team from XSNRG. Complete results and
pictures can be found on the web site www.avonrunning.com.
The event was fun and festive with a
piper and a female Mountie (who quickly changed from red serge to shorts to
walk in the 5K) leading the way to the start. Toronto fire fighters working at
two aid stations and operating a spray station on the 10K route were enthusiastically received by the
women. Kathrine Switzer, Program
Director for the Avon Running Global Women's Circuit, the first woman to break
the gender barrier at the Boston Marathon and a winner of the New York City
Marathon joined the throngs of women in the 10K offering encouragement and
support along the way. The Grand Poobah provided the music for the post race
festivities in the Commerce Court courtyard.
Race Director, Jill Hamilton,
attributes much of the event's success to Avon's commitment, a great organizing
committee and a super team of sponsors, including the Running Room. "The
tremendous support of the Running Room really helped the event take off. The
enthusiasm for the event displayed by the clinic leaders, staff, aid station
volunteers and participants was wonderful.
Kirby Reddin and his staff at the Commerce Court deserve special thanks
for allowing us to practically take over the store." Other event sponsors
were Astro Dairy Products, Bank of Montreal, Clearnet Business Communications Centres,
Great Canadian Bagel, Minute Maid, PowerBar, Second Cup, Ste. Anne's Pure
Spring Water, The Ontario Produce Marketing Association and XLR8.
Ben Gallina, President of Avon
Canada, announced on race day that the Avon Running - Global Women's Circuit
will be back in Toronto next year and will possibly expand to other Canadian
cities in 1999.
